What's Going On In Art

4th Grade:
The beginning of the month was focused on the Mexican holiday Dia De Los Muertos or Day of the Dead. The students learned about this Mexican tradition and it's importance in the culture. We made paper collages of the famous Sugar Skulls in celebration!

 4th Grade EDU:
The EDU students learned about Warm & Cool Colors. We used various shapes to create a composition that the students would then paint in with either a warm color palette or cool color palette. Watercolor was the medium for this lesson, allowing the students to also work with various shades of color.

Currently the 4th grade students are learning about Native American Weaving. We will use this technique to create paper place-mats that the students will be able to use. More pictures soon!

5th Grade:
The 5th grade students are making Tissue Paper Self-Portraits. We are focusing on proportion and how to draw an accurate face. For color, we are painting with Bleeding Tissue paper, which gives a tie-dye effect to the paper. the students were really excited to use this technique of painting and were very pleased with the end results

Throughout October the students worked on their Sunsets and Silhouettes. This lesson was focused on the students creating a picture using only Silhouettes and then using a watercolor wash for the background which would resemble a sunset or night sky.

 5th Grade EDU:
The EDU students made Oil Pastel Banyan Trees. We talked about and looked at Banyan trees and what makes them unique. The students made representational drawings of the trees which would be later painted in black. The background was filled in using oil pastels, focusing on creating a horizon line, showing the separation of ground and sky.

6th Grade:
The 6th grade students also spent the beginning of the month working on Sugar Skulls. Like the 4th grade we talked about Dia De Los Muertos and its importance to the Mexican Culture. The students made large scale skulls, focusing on symmetry and design. Some added glitter, gems and sequence to the skull, while others even made paper flowers to adorn it.

The students learned about One-Point Perspective. They used a horizon line and vanishing point to create their names in three-dimension. Backgrounds were added to complete the overall design.

6th Grade EDU:
The students learned about Mandalas and their purpose of creating unity, harmony and balance. Using a compass the students made a radial design, focusing on line, pattern and repetition. Color was added using oil pastels.
